One of our family’s favorites Christmas activities is decorating our home. From the lights on the outside of the house, to the Christmas tree, to the stockings on the mantle, wherever you look you’ll see a piece of Christmas.

Each decoration holds a special part of our family’s Christmas spirit, and every year, we create at least one handmade decoration to add to our collection. Sometimes our handmade décor lasts only one year, while others become valued pieces that last from year to year, priceless pieces of our family history.

Kids love creating Christmas decorations, and there are so many quick and easy holiday décor projects that you can create with your children. Here are a few ideas to get you started on your own handmade holiday collection!

  • Homemade Ornaments: Our Christmas tree has ornaments on it right now that I made when I was a little girl. There are several different types of ornaments that are perfect for kids to create themselves or with a little help from mom. Salt dough ornaments are very popular these days, and with a few cookie cutters and stamps, you can create just about any ornament you could imagine to hang on your tree. My girls made some super cute and festive ornaments with their Very Merry Ornaments kit from ALEX! Ornaments are easy to personalize too, which makes them even more special.
  • Make a Banner: Banners are another fun and festive project idea for the holidays. With a strand of ribbon and some construction paper, you could create a banner with a variety of Christmas themed objects like trees, snowflakes, snowmen, and Santa hats. Hang them on a wall, across a mantle, or even atop a window or door frame. We used the Christmas Banner craft kit from ALEX Toys to make a felt banner that is sure to be used for many more Christmases to come! All the prepared and easy to use felt pieces created colorful holiday items that added a pop of Christmas cheer to my daughters’ room.
  • Popsicle Stick Crafts: Popsicle sticks can be used to create all sorts of holiday inspired crafts, from popsicle stick trees, to ornaments, to even a whole nativity scene! They are durable, easy to glue together, and super inexpensive. We love popsicle sticks at our house!
  • Advent Calendars: Advent calendars are a fun and festive way to count down the days till Christmas, but they can also be an important part of your holiday décor. We made a tree-shaped advent calendar last year that had little hooks on each number where we hung an ornament. Each day, the kids would take turns hanging that ornament on the tree. It was so much fun, and the kids even helped me make it. There are tons of creative advent calendar ideas out there, and may use items you have right at home!
