I knew I needed to get organized when a babysitter told my kids to clean up their rooms and my oldest daughter said, “Why? Just look at our house!”

So, the piles of books got organized and our house feels much tidier. I’ve found that organizing our children’s books (in more than piles) entice my kids, even the youngest, to read.

To make reading even more fun, we created cozy reading spaces in the kids’ rooms and in the living room.

You can do it, too. Here are our tried and true suggestions.

1. Create a Cozy Reading Nook for Kids

Create a reading corner for your kids to curl up in. You’ll want it to be comfy. You need a small space like a corner, window seat or tent. Then, consider where to sit and how to decorate:

  • Area
  • Throw-pillows
  • Chair
  • Beanbag

  • Rug
  • Lamp
  • Posters
  • Blankets
  • Stuffed animals
  • Flashlights

  • Books
  • CD player for audio books
  • Bookmarks
  • Books in tubs or shelves
  • Drawing paper
  • Pencils and pens

2. Organize Your House

Try to spread out the books from room to room. Then, your kids can always find a good book. So, if each room needs books, you need ideas for organization.

Floor and Table Organization

  • Tubs
  • Baskets
  • Freestanding bookshelf
  • Wagon

Wall Organization

  • Re-purposed Shelves: IKEA spice racks and rain gutter shelves
  • Bookshelves

Book Organization
Make mini-libraries through your house by putting similar books together, by age and/or theme.

By Age

Separate books by age: board books, picture books, and chapter books from easy to harder.

By Theme

Group books by topics: holiday, animals, magic, pop-up, library books, poetry, and so forth.

That babysitter didn’t work out. But, she did give me a wake up call to get organized.

What are your favorite ways to organize your books? Do your kids help?
