As my belly begins to expand (literally more and more every day!), I am steadily getting excited about bringing out the baby toys again. So when I saw the Stack Me Up toy from ALEX Jr, it was love at first sight.
Not only is it adorable, but it really is a great developmental toy! While it is geared toward kids six months to one year of age, I believe that this toy is perfect to grow with your child during the first two years of life. Younger children love the sensory elements while older kids love to explore the more imaginative side of the toy.
Here are developmental skills that I thought this toy really targeted:
Sensory Development: Much of your child’s development in his first year of life is concentrated in the sensory systems. Alex Jr’s Stack Me Up stimulates several of your child’s senses, including touch, sight, and sound. And while your child may not be able to coordinate their movements to stack up the pieces when younger than six months, they will enjoy exploring with the various sensory components. Each tier includes bright, fun colors and patterns, as well as familiar sounds for your child to explore, including squeaks, crinkles, and rattles. The sense of touch is activated as your child explores the different soft and bumpy textures.
I personally love this toy because it also encourages your child to explore with his mouth. During the first year of life, a child’s primary means of exploration is through the mouth. The little teethers are in perfect position for your little one to grasp and chew!
Motor Development: Stacking is an early developmental skill. I love the Velcro stacker versus the ring stacker design because it allows your child to build their coordination and accuracy gradually. They are able to be successful even if they are unable to align the pieces perfectly together. Another one of my favorite parts of Stack Me Up is that it encourages your child to use both of their hands together to pull and push the pieces together, which builds bilateral skills.
Cognitive Development: Of course, ALEX Jr’s Stack Me Up is great for encouraging imagination, cause and effect, and problem-solving, but I, personally, love the cute build-a-creature-design. I think this is a great way to introduce body awareness as you play, identifying the legs, arms, body, facial features, and hair on the toy and your child at the same time!
Of course my 22 month old jumped right in on the fun! Since she is older, we focused more on talking about the different parts of the body, counting the pieces, and sorting by size, all of which were great entertainment and a great learning opportunity in one!
